Task 2 recap: Analysis the design principles found in Task 1 selected artwork. (The size, placement, purpose, effectiveness of the design in relation to the UNSDG)

· VISUAL  ANALYSIS ·

Visual analysis is a critical part of visual literacy. We are constantly confronted with the visual media, visual analysis skills can strengthen our critical judgement skill and help us seek out the 'meaning' of artwork instead of just passively receiving information.

How does visual analysis work?
included three parts: Observation, Analysis, Interpretation. Below are the descriptions of each part.

Observation : What you look and identify from the artwork, describing the visual elements of the design.

Analysis : Think of the observation based on the evidence of the observation. State how the artwork combines the design principles and what are the visual effects on the viewer.

Interpretation : The background of the design. What is the meaning and purpose of the design?

Artwork selected in Task 1 · Gender Inequality · 'Your Body is a Battleground'

"Your Body Is A Battleground"
by Barbara Kruger

Year: 1989
Size: 284.48 x 284.48 (cm)
Medium: Photographic silkscreen

Phase 1 Observation
The design work takes the form of portrait, with a woman face in the center of the poster. The face is vertically divided into two parts, the left side in black-and-white tone and right side in inverse colour tone. The left-right side border is created by red thick lines. The slogan 'Your Body is a Battleground' is divided into three small lines from top to bottom and arranged evenly in the middle. The image is observed as black, white, grey and the words in the border are observed as red.

Phase 2 Analysis
The design is symmetrically balanced. The emphasis is that the slogan in red border ' Your Body is a Battleground' overlayed onto the black and white photographic imagery, the use of the red colour can easily draw the viewer's first attention, emphasizing the highlighted message. Behind the slogan, the split face shows us the contrast between the left-right face in different tones. The cooperation of text and image make the message more accurate and direct, the use of "Your', connects the viewers and focuses the attention on the topic of reproductive rights.

Phase 3 Interpretation

The 3 artworks form Barbara Kruger draw from visual language of Pop Art and Conceptual Art. She uses bold typography, collage, and graphic design elements to create impactful composition and her iconic black-and-white photographs overlaid with declarative captions (usually in red-on-white) echo the directness of pop art. She critiques societal norms, gender roles, and power structures. She critiques societal norms, often empowering the viewer to question the status. Besides, the captions of these 3 works serve as the conceptual statements, emphasising the idea rather then the aesthetics. Her concise phrases synthesize complex issues, urging viewers to consider deeper meaning and reflect on contemporary circumstances.

The design medium of these 3 works is photographic silkscreen, which is printing technique that transfers a photographic image to a substrate.

· FEEDBACK ·

Feedback (1/3/2024)
For Phase 3 interpretation, I have to attach two additional artworks by either the same artist or different artists, showcasing similarities. My written analysis should encompass the design style, design language, and design medium employed. At the conclusion of the task, ensure to write the weekly feedback and further reading session as well.

Feedback (6/3/2024)
Add 1~2 sentences for the recap of task 2. Reduce the total words to below 350.  Move the first and third paragraphs of Phase 2 to Phase 3. The interpretation need to focus on the 3 artworks attached, focusing analysis the art movement. as well as conceptual art and pop art. Also, emphasis the similarities (original similarities move to phase 3).  In Futher reading part, I just need a summary and not too much. Separate the feedback session and reflection session.

· REFLECTION ·

Week 3 ·
Continuing from the previous task, this task has a clearer theme and direction. What needs to be used in this part is to analyze the artwork by design principles and explain the meaning behind the work. There is sufficient information about this artwork on the internet, so what I need to do is organize the information.

Week 4 ·
After completing the basic structure, submit it to Mr. Zeon and get feedback. This week, feedback session and further reading session have been added to the blogger.

Week 5 ·
After consultation with Mr. Zeon this week, I get more improved feedback. I made some mistakes in understanding, I wrote in the wrong direction in phase 3 as I have to focus on the Design Style instead of the 'Story' behind the works. After guidance from Mr. Zeon, I have a clear idea for it, and then I read more about Pop Art and Conceptual Art.
