Task 3 recap: Produce a work of design that inspired by the previous analysed artwork. Apply the knowledge of design principles studied. Allowed to use any medium but not direct use of photogaphs.

· MOODBOARD ·

In terms of reference, I chose to use Barbie as the main reference object because it is a movie that has recently caused a heated discussion on 'feminism'. This movie makes many points on gender equality, which is in align with my choice of UNSDG goal - Gender Inequality. In terms of design, the strong pink main colour tone has a good color reference value.

In addition, one of the two portraits referenced is that of the German female artist Annegret Soltau. Her famous ‘surgical thread’ plays an important role in women’s self-awakening art. The other illustration portrait expresses the relationship between social norms and women. It will be a reference for my design.

· SKETCHES ·

Sketch #1 <You are who you are>

Fig 2.1 Sketch #1

Sketch #2 <You can be anything>

Fig 2.2 Sketch #2

As a doll that is popular all over the world, Barbie is so-called 'perfect woman'. Barbie's hairstyle, facial features, makeup, and clothing are all impeccable. This kind of commodification, entertainment, and standaradization of women is a constraint on women caused by consumerism, patriarchal gaze, and racial discrimination. 'Woman is not born, she is made.' (Quote by Andrea Dworkin) They are not commodities and accessories in a patriarchal society, but become themselves. They can engage in the profession they like and be whatever they want.

Through the two faces in these two sketches, I want to convey that neither "beautiful Barbie" nor "ordinary girl" is an accessory, they are both unique and brilliant themselves.

Design Principles Included:
  • Contrast between perfect woman 'Barbie' and ordinary girl.
  • Emphasis the message using the pink bold text.
  • Balance in symmetrical composition.
  • Word and Image of the girls' potraits and the caption.

Sketch #3 <You are not just a mother>
Fig 2.3 Sketch #3

'Your are not just a mother' inpired from the traditional concepts of East Asia. The stereotyped education for women in East Asia is that 'you don't need wisdom, you just need to find a good husband and have a pair of children, and that's your complete life'. Therefore, women in that era (even nowadays) rarely had their own careers and relied on their husbands for their lives. As a result, many women ended up facing betrayal by their husbands and lost themselves from then on. 'Becoming a good mother' is exactly the domesticatio of women in a patriarchal society.

What I want to say is that every mother is an individual who deserves to be seen. They can choose to be a mother or not. They can pursue their dreams and have a more dimensional life. The surgical lines on the portrait represent their multiple identities.
  • Emphasis the message using the pink bold text.
  • Balance in symmetrical composition.
  • Word and Image of the girls' potraits and the caption.

Sketch #4  Sketch 3 After Adjustment

Fig 2.4 Sketch #4

In consultation with Mr. Zeon in class, he suggested me to continue and combine the previous three drafts, which gave me a sense of coherence throughout the design process. So this sketch #4 is my combined final draft. Detailed concept description will be presented in Final Design part.
  • Contrast between perfect woman 'Barbie' and ordinary girl.
  • Emphasis the message using the pink bold text.
  • Balance in symmetrical composition.
  • Word and Image of the girls' potraits and the caption.

· FINAL DESIGN ·

Fig 3.1 Final Poster, Week 7

Design Principles:
  • Contrast
  • Emphasis
  • Balance
  • Word and Image
Art Movement and Style Reference:
  • Pop Art
  • Conceptual Art
This work is based on ‘Gender Inequality’ in the UNSDG and is inspired by the female-focused film “Barbie”. Promote the idea of female self-awakening.

This design is symmetrically balanced. This poster make a contrast between the appearance and color of the two girls on the left and right. Ordinary’s color is relatively plain, while barbie’s color is brighter. Caption in pink bold emphasis the message of 'You are not just a mother'. The cooperation of word and image make the message more accurate and direct, the use of "You', connects the viewers and focuses the attention on the topic of self-awakening.

The sutured surgical threads represent the healing of women's status that was oppressed in the past. Every mother and every girl will finally become a 'Barbie' in their hearts. Refers to the description from Sketch #3 —— The caption 'Your are not just a mother' inpired from the traditional concepts of East Asia. The stereotyped education for women in East Asia is that 'you don't need wisdom, you just need to find a good husband and have a pair of children, and that's your complete life'. 'Becoming a good mother' is exactly the domesticatio of women in a patriarchal society.

· FEEDBACK ·

Feedback (12/3/2024)
Mr. Zeon mentioned that I did well on integrating visual references with my thoughts. He recommend continuing to develop from sketch 3 and referring back to the concept from sketch 2, I can integrate the Barbie in my sketch 3, to make a contrast between the "ordinary girl" and "pretty" Barbie.
Additionally, Mr. Zeon suggest incorporating typography into my poster which inspired by the artist selected in task 1. List all design principles in the drawings as well.

Feedback (13/3/2024)
For my sketch #4, Mr. Zeon suggested me to remove the surgery lines from Barbie's side to make a stronger contrast. And we had a good communication about the meaning behind my design. Mr. Zeon is very tolerant and provides guidance to my design. What I need to improve is sorting out the meaning behind my design works.

According to the feedback, I didn’t just remove the scars on the barbie girl’s face, but also removed the ordinary girl’s line, leaving only the “healing line” in the middle. Because if I just keep the line of ordinary girl, I worry that my work will be easily misunderstood as "the girl on the left is ugly, the girl on the right is beautiful", which is not the concept I want to convey. Women's beauty is not a necessity, they are just their own "Barbie".

· REFLECTION ·

Week 6 ·
In the week 6 class, Mr. Zeon showed my blogger to the class and praised my reference and explanation part for my good job, and gave me good guidance and discussed my design, I needed to give more reasonable meaning to my design. Mr. Zeon asked me hoping his suggestions would not make me go against the meaning of my design, which made me really appreciate.

Week 7 ·
This week, I have completed most of the homework content. According to the Mr. Zeon's feedback, I only need to make some small changes and adjustments. This week I received encouragement from the teacher, "Gold will shine wherever it is." Thanks to the Mr. Zeon for the encouragement.

Many people think that feminism equals female empowerment, but this is only a superficial understanding of it. True feminism is women seek equal status with men. Feminism does not mean the prevalence of a matriarchal or patriarchal society, but a society that strives to achieve equality for all genders. The movie "Barbie" is a typical demonstration of this point of view.
