EXERCISES

Extra Exercise · Bezier Game

We had told that we can do exercise in Bezier Game to improve our skill in using Pen tool in either Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator.

Digital Imaging Exercises 1 · Photo Manipulation
 (Hearst Mansion)

Part 1 · Hearst Mansion

In Week 5, we are given a task: cut out the character 'Shazam' and combine it into the background of Hearst Mansion.

fig 1.1 picture given 'Shazam', Week 5

fig 1.2 picture given 'Hearst Mansion', Week 5

After cut out the subject of 'Shazam', I made adjustments (Luminance, Intensity Color, Fade) in layer 'Shazam' to make it match into the background.

Part 2 · My Reflection

Our second part of the task was to take a photograph of ourself, and edit it into the Hearst Mansion photo. I used photo taken outdoors in the lat two weeks as the subject.
fig 2.1 Full-body self-potrait and masking, Week 5

Since my photo has a backlight, I chose to place my subject in the entrance where the sunlight is coming through, I think this makes my subject blend more into this background, also I took into account the direction of the light source, I made my shadow come from the left Tilt to the right.

Digital Imaging Exercises 2 · Recolouring Black & White

Part 1 · Recolouring with brush tool

In week 6, our work was to turn black and white photos into coloured photos. The first part we were taught was to use the brush tool, which is to use the brush to lay the colour on the layer and adjust the blending mode. Then it can achieve the effect of adding colour.

Part 2 · Recolouring with Layer Masks

The second guided recolouring method is to use the layer masks function. We first find the reference picture to absorb the color, and use the selection tool to make the layer mask, and then link the layer masks layer to the solid color to achieve the recolouring effect.

fig 3.4 Before and after recolouring, Week 7

In order to improve the use of layer masks function, we also need to choose one of the following photos for practice, I choose a potrait of Karmay Ngai. In blending mode of coloured layer, I normally use 'Softlight' or 'Overlay'.

PROJECT 2B · CONCEPTUAL PHOTOSHOOTING

Mood Board (3 References) ·

Fig 5.1 Reference Posters, Week 10

This is from a Chinese poster designer that I have been following for a long time. His works are always full of surprising creativity. He usually uses an all-white background, combines and emphasizes the main object with humorous short sentences. Therefore, I want to use him as a learning target. First, find the subject I want to shoot, and think about what the subject can be combined with, find the connection between them, and then combine them with some Interesting quotes.

Sketches ·

Mock Up ·

I used the sketches #2 to do my final concept. First prepare the subject: umbrella and pen. Make my DIY ‘Studio’ using the camera, white shirt as background, dog doll as pen tripod, Iphone torch as the light’s source,

Fig 5.6 Photoshooting Products, Week 10

Then import the photo into Adobe Photoshop, cut out the subject using Pen Tool. Combine two subject and duplicate the whole shape to make shadow. Use Gaussian Blur to make the shadow more natural ans last add the white background (white solid layer with Noise effect).

Knowledge can be Your Shelter

The tip of the pencil represents the knowledge learned.
When we are full of knowledge, we are no longer afraid of the ‘storm’.

REFLECTION

Experience ·

Digital Imaging Exercises:

This project start from Shazam photo manipulating,  we first learn to manipulate a subject A into background B (Shazam and our self portrait).  In addition, import the subjects of other photos into another scene, light and color grading determine their degree of fusion, so the adjustment layer is also one of the learning focuses of this project. The second exercise is recolouring black and white photos, which I think is also one of the very useful skills.  For me, the learning focus of exercise part 2 is how to manipulating the hair in people’s photos. The basic cutout function can’t do it well, so we learned the masking technique here to deal with the hair of the subject.

Double Exposure Project 2A:

In the exposure project, I had already take a personal portrait recent the day, so I could save more time as just dropped the ready-made photos into PS to work double exposure work. The clipping mask learned in class so the steps which had already learned helped me not encounter too many operational difficulties in this project.

Conceptual Photoshooting Project 2B:

Conceptual photoshoot is one of my favorite projects at the moment, because my DIY studio is very fun. I used cameras and various materials commonly found in bedrooms, such as clothes and dolls, to set the scene. Lighting is also a particularly interesting step.

Observation ·

Digital Imaging Exercises:

It’s satisfying to learn new techniques in Photoshop, such as how to cut out hair strands and re-color black and white photo . But the complicated and unfamiliar steps make me sometimes forget what is the Next step.

Double Exposure Project 2A:

I found that the key to making an excellent double exposure poster is good material selection and composition.

Conceptual Photoshooting Project 2B:

I really like the concept of combining two unrelated things, it sparks creativity and interest.

Findings ·

Digital Imaging Exercises:

In order to solve it, I will take notes on the steps during the lecture or tutorial so that I can learn it again when I need them. But the best way must be keep it in mind, so the way to become familiar with the operation is to practice it continuously.

Double Exposure Project 2A:

Most posters on the market use the double exposure technique, so I think this assignment is very useful and interesting.

Conceptual Photoshooting Project 2B:

From the DIY studio I built to shooting the finished product and post-production, the whole process made me passionate and satisfied.
