Project 1 : Vomator Challenge

Lab 1 · The Pen Tool

In Week 1, we had done a mini game which is The Bezier Game for learning how the pen tool works. It is very usefuk for beginner for Adobe Illustrator. I couldn't understand how to use the pen tool of Adoebe Illustrator before.

After submit the result in Teams, Mr Hafiz launched a challenge: Who can done it by 9 nodes?  So i tried several times and finally achieved it. I have to say it was really difficult for a beginner.

Lab 2 · Chiaroscuro

Exercise 1 : Pear

This task of making Chiaroscuro let's us learn how to use Adobe Illustrator to creat the brightness and darkness contrast in objects.

Exercise 2 : People

Our second exercise is similar to the previous one. It is to strengthen the skills learned previously. This time the object is a people, so we first trace and then segment the shadows.

Project 1 · Vormator Challenge

Project 1 is to create a monster in Pokemon, we get the same set of elements and we only can use these shapes to create an own unique design, and we are provided in the Rules:
Allowed to rotate, flip and duplicate the Elements.
Use all the Elements Scaling is allowed, but  proportionally, so skewing or free transform.
  • Add, subtract, intersect and group elements as see fit.
  • The use of color is unrestricted
  • Can create your own color schemes (e.g. use adobe Color)
  • Allowed to use gradients
  • The Elements may be filled, the use of strokes is allowed
  • Allowed to use filters or effects (e.g. drop shadows)
First, I drew hand-drawn sketches in procreate. Although only two of them were used in the next process, but the drawing process gave me a lot of inspiration and ideas. I think the third turtle is very similar to the hero in Pokemon. Squirtle, so later I continued to make a new character 'Cheeky' using his color scheme.

fig 4.4 Outline View of character 'Rogee', Week 3

I first made a more complete digitization of three characters who are Meow Meow Ghost, Rogee, Cheeky. I will choose one of them as my final assignment.

I asked Mr Hafiz for his opinion and he said they were all great and I could choose any of these three. I like all three and if I have enough time I will make all three into finished works. But I chose Cheeky in the end because I like his cat tail.

I added texture by making clipping mask to the shadow parts, here are the materials:

Next, I need to create Cheeky’s background first. I set his character to live in a small cave in a forest, surrounded by dense trees and Cheeky’s favorite fruit, oranges.

The last step of the project is to put the Cheeky into the vormator card. I used the template given by Mr. Hafiz and adjusted the colors related to the cheeky characteristic (Green) to make the whole picture coordinated.

Character Setting:
Cheeky lives in a cave in the Gold Forest. If you have ever explored there, you must have seen him! He looks innocent and cute, but he is actually a super troublemaker! So WHY he call Cheeky. Be careful! He likes to sneak up on you with his oranges when you're not looking!
Do you see his big mouth? Watch out for the orange bombs he shoots from his mouth!

FEEDBACK

Week 6 : I can choose any of my three characters, there are all great!  When I couldn't make the shadow in Adobe Illustrator, Mr. Hafiz gave me a guide that press 'Ctrl+Y' to see if its divided.

REFLECTION

This is my favorite project in my first semester. Although it was a bit difficult to come into contact with Adobe Illustrator for the first time, Mr. Hafiz personally demonstrated every step, which allowed me to learn a lot of skills and become more familiar with using this software.

In the process of creating the character, I searched a lot on the Internet for inspiration from various game characters, which gave me a rough understanding that creating a character should start with the background of the story, so that the colors are more vivid. The reference also gives me a general understanding of the structure of character creation, so I rarely encounter problems with inspiration in the subsequent process, so I think doing pre-investigation is a very important point in design. The biggest problem I faced in this project was the use of Adobe Illustrator.

But there is still a lot of room for improvement, because I need to search for tutorials online for every step I don't know how to do. I hope I can complete the homework independently without relying on tutorials in the future. Character creation is a job that I like very much. I like to draw and create lively and cute characters, which allows me to immerse myself in creation.
