Task 2 : Text Formatting and Expression
This task combines the skills learned in the previous two exercises,
and we need to apply them in this task. We need to choose one of the
three articles given by Mr.Vinod, design the heading's expression and
article layout for it based on the theme. The topics of these three
articles are: Bauhaus, A code to build on and live by, Unite to
visualise a better world.
Week 6 | I think Bauhaus's article will be more creative, but because too
many people have chosen this topic, and I think seniors have already
performed this topic very well, so I chose the third topic: Unite to
Visualise a Better World.
fig 1.1 Article given, Week 5
First, I took a rough look at the content of the article, and then
started planning to design the heading. According to Mr.Vinod, there
is no need to design every word of the heading. The most important
thing is to grasp the key point of the entire heading, so I grabbed
'Unite'. Although I think 'Visualise' is also the key point of the
article, but I think the word 'Unite' could give me more ideas of
design.
My first idea that popped up was that the 'U' and 'N' of Unite could
be linked together at once, so based on this idea I searched for
inspirations online.

| 1.2 Pre-Research, Week 5 |
From the above reference, I roughly came up with some ideas, I started to draw a few sketches on Procreate with my Ipad. I made the better ones into digitization, and I also tried several 3D ring designs, but I gave up after tried as my current computer cannot run 3D.

First use AI to create several title designs at once, then place it into Indesign to add the article and formatting. I show my 4 works below to get feedback in class:

Mr.Vinod said I can continue to make improvement based on the fourth one, which has a better idea. After the feedback, I then modified the kerning of the paragraph and the number of words in the paragraph to make the formatting look neater. Also modified the text direction of the leading mentioned by Mr.Vinod.

The following is adjusted based on feedback, but I feel that the title is not highlighted well except for U and N, so I want to enlarge the title content.

I adjust the Heading layout by let it follows the shape of 'n', making its position look less rigid. I make the 'Unite' has a tight tracking to show that is 'unite' together.

FEEDBACK
Week 6 ·
General Feedback: Try to make alignments of image and text. Make sure the textboxes are not placed scattered and don’t use different typefaces as possible. Mr. Vinod told us we need to THINK ABOUT THE MEANING of the design, not only to ‘looking good’. Also, heading design is not just ‘Enlarge’ the word.
Specific Feedback: Mr.Vinod pointed out that my font size and line length could be better as my work has a large font size with short line length. My ragging could be strengthen and my vertically leading font was meaningless.
Week 7 ·
General Feedback: Your design must be meaningful, not just to make it looking good.
REFLECTION
Experience ·
In this task, I can use the software more masterly and understand what Mrv.Vinod taught in class than in the previous class. I have gradually adapted to the rhythm and homework of this class, which makes it much easier for me.
Observation ·
During this assignment, I deeply remembered what Mr Vinod mentioned, that design is not just for looking good, but for meaning. I deeply understand the meaning of this sentence. Design without meaning is empty. As a designer, I believe that whenever I face the issue of inspiration, I am always stuck on ‘how to make my work special’. In addition, the problem I encountered when completing this assignment was that the progress was not saved and the archive was lost. This was a very shocking accident.
Findings ·
When encountering obstacles in the inspiration stage, we should think about the composition of the design in terms of the ‘meaning behind the design’. I understand that my work is not the best, but I need to keep a learning attitude to complete these assignments.
FURTHER READING
The Vignelli Canon (2010)
by Massimo Vignelli
Design involves everywhere in our lives, whether it is an object or a personal product. In my understanding, design is a series of visual art processes, which is the best expression of human wisdom and emotion. Everyone needs to design their life.
The book 'The Vignelli Canon' mentions that although design is mainly unstable inspiration, it cannot be done casually. Design is very serious, and its standards are very high. There is no best, only better. At first, i thought that design was probably used to make profits. As there are many luxury goods in life that do not look exquisite, but are exprensive and give people the impression that they are brand trap. After reading the book, I discovered that many things cannot be defined arbitrarily. Brands and companies that only make money from people are gradually being abandoned. Brands that are able to survive through constant elimination, even if they don't have the latest designs, they have a lugh design libary.
