Project 1 · Mobile Application Proposal

This project tasked us with redesigning an existing app that had a bad rating or had some UI/UX design issues; we needed to fix and rebuild it so that it was a better app for users to use.

Select an app to redesign |

I have selected 3 app as my options:
1. Carousell
2. Mudah.my
3, Moovit
Fig 1.1 3 Options Selected

Actually, before this class, I had the concept of redesigning a second-hand marketplace apps like Carousell because I used to use it but disliked it. So, I was interested in this class. Carousell and Mudah. My apps are both second-hand marketplace apps, which I chose because I believe the designs of these two apps are boring to the younger generation. While second-hand marketplaces are getting more popular, second-hand apps in Malaysia continue to receive negative feedback.

And my last option is Moovit, a public transportation navigation app that can show you how to take a public transit route to get to your location. And, as a moovit user, I've seen that it has several unfriendly app designs for me to utilize, thus I believe it may also need to be redesigned.

Be the user first |

How to be user-friendly: become the user and understand what they see and desire. So, I've tried some basic uses of these applications and downloaded several comparable function apps to serve as references/competitors to assist me better understand them.

#1 Carousell |

Carousell is a popular second-hand marketplace app in Malaysia. I used it a few years ago to discover a used model. At the time, I found the app difficult to use, and I didn't want to buy and then delete it. Recently, there has been a trend of buying and selling second-hand items, so I began using XianYu, a second-hand app in China. XianYu is a good app, but the "weakness" is that everything is from China, so if I buy something, I have to wait for a long time to transport it, so I began to think that Malaysia should have an app like this. So, here is my initial concept for redesigning Carousell.

Carousell has a good rating of 4.8, however its main issue is the existence of many scammers. Although it has several UI problems, reviews on the app store show that Carousell has been updating and improving based on feedback from users. Carousell's core capabilities are rather full, and it does not have the biggest space for development in UI of the three possibilities, so I was stuck for a long time trying to locate the weakness. I finally did not chose Carousell.

#2 Mudah.my |

Mudah.my is also a big second-hand marketplace for real estate, automobiles, services, and recruitment. Actually, I am not a user of this app; I chose it because when I looked for other apps comparable to Carousell, I discovered that the interface design of this app similarly appears to be in need of revision. So, I've done some initial testing for this app.

Except for the interface design, which does not appeal to me, it has reasonably comprehensive features. After analyzing the app's weaknesses and design, I had only little idea how to improve it, thus I did not pick it as my final design app.

#3 Moovit |

Moovit is a public transportation app that allows users to plan routes and receive real-time transit updates for buses and trains (LRT, MRT, Monorail, KTM, etc.). I use this app since I do not drive in KL and prefer to take public transportation. But I didn't use Moovit only; instead, I combined it with Google Maps since Moovit has so many advertising that it can even lead me to miss my bus if I don't watch the complete ads and then check which bus I need to take. So, generally, I use Moovit to check what routes I have and the cost to ensure that I have enough balance on my TNG card, and then select that route on Google Maps and follow its navigation.

Moovit has all of the functions but lacks a user-friendly design, therefore I'd want to prefer Moovit since I use it and believe it has the potential to improve; I hope I can only use Moovit in the future and not have to switch to Google Maps.

Final Selected App | Moovit

Purpose of Proposal |

  • To understand the background of the Moovit app, including its target customer groups and other relevant information, and to analyze the parts of the existing app (Moovit) that do not meet UI/UX standards and negatively impact the user experience.
  • To emphasize the importance of user experience in this UI/UX design.
  • To establish a clearer redesign direction, completing the analysis of weaknesses in the proposal and making improvements based on the suggestions and feedback provided by users.

Progresses |

After adding some more statements about the topic introduction (the importance of mobile applications, elements, etc.), I extended the original proposal design and made some changes to make it clearer. First, I'd want to provide a general overview of the app, its current design, and the ratings from the last proposal.
Fig 1.7 Introduction of Moovit

Moving on, I have a competing app called citymapper. There are a lots navigation app like Google Maps, however Google Maps is not tailored to public transit. Citymapper is more comparable to Moovit, and it was a highly developed software in terms of UI design and functionality, however it was not supported in Malaysia. So, moovit is popular in Malaysia, despite the fact that it has many bugs, since it has less competitors in the Malaysia market.

I used citymapper when I was in Singapore and Hong Kong, and I truly enjoy it because of its attractive and comfortable visual style and comprehensive functionality. So, I believe Moovit can continue its strength, which is dependable routes, while also improving its look and functionality in comparison to CityMapper.

Later, I evaluate the strengths and find more weakness statements to include in the silde, as well as demographic data from SimilarWeb.

REFLECTION

| Experience |
I was done the presentation slide last minute before the presentation, as I was absent for some personal reason for 2 weeks and not update my progress to Mr. Zeon. I still feel regret because it led to the poor quality of my work, and the final Moovit theme was the same as that of my classmates. If I had consulted Mr. Zeon earlier, I might have been able to change the theme in time to avoid the same title affecting the score. However, Moovit is indeed one of the topics I want to do, so I still feel very happy to have the opportunity to redesign the moovit app. The only thing is that there are three people in the class doing the same theme, which makes the pressure a little bit high.

| Observation |
I discovered that time management is critical; taking the time to complete tasks properly minimizes stress. In addition, the "pain points" found in life can be of great help to this project, such as the carousell problem I found when buying and selling in the second-hand market. In fact, I still think that carousell is also a great theme. I hope that if I design my own app in the future instead of redesigning, I will choose the second-hand marketplace app as the theme!

| Findings |
In this work, I requested feedback less regularly. Asking the tutor for comments is a good method to improve and understand my own weaknesses.
